Why use coins before the blue shell hits you? I would say use coins right after it hits you to be sure you get the coins back. That’s asking to be smoked by a red shel. It’s usually not worth trading a banana for a double item box. This will slow you down less and protect you from the bigger impact of the blue shell. If a blue shell is coming for you and you have nothing but banana peel, throw the peel in front of you and drive into it.That way you don’t lose them if a blue shell hits you. Don’t unnecessarily drag items behind you.Coins reappear significantly slower than item boxes. They give a small boost and you're potentially not letting the person behind you have full coins. Even with full coins try to collect coins from the path without going out of your way too much.If people are right behind you or you see them holding green shells, forget about holding on to coins and just cover your ass.Again, the less information you give away the better. Not letting others know what you have.Holding on to a coin ensures that the next item you get is blocking (with rare exceptions caused by connection lag).Protecting better items against stealing.Hold on to coins for as you can spare the space.Try to always hold on to 2 blocking items for protection, preferably super horn as second item so it's protected against stealing and red shells. A mushroom is also an excellent item if you are able to evade blue shells with it.For example Yoshi Valley or Wario’s Gold Mine. Some parts of some maps they don’t really work in, getting lost or colliding in to objects. Know where and when red shells don’t work. Also you don’t want the person in 1st to be able to block 2 shells with one super horn blow. Not too rapidly or they collide with each other. Throw red shells at appropriate intervals. Then shoot and grab new items which they are now very possibly defenceless against. If you have a red shell and the person in 1st is protected, stay on them until the next set of item boxes are between the two of you.If the person in 1st is holding a coin but you know them to have 2 items they're protected and you shouldn’t throw your only red shell. Look back to make sure it's safe before you smoke them. Sometimes it’s wise to hold on to items even if the person in front of you has no protection. The less information you give to others the better. When invisible, don’t hold on to an item behind you to give yourself away.Assume that they will throw something back at you if they see you directly behind. Steer clear from people in front of you with items. Some players turn out pretty “irrelevant” in a mixed lobby, they might not even be worth wasting items on. Be aware of your opponents’ playing levels and go for the skilled ones more. The basic gist is to use the boost at the very last moment before detonation when the shell is showing its back spikes to you. It’s very useful to learn how to escape a blue shell with a mushroom. This optimizes your chances of getting something good. Keep from using a boost or a star until right before the upcoming item box to be as far away as possible when getting the item. Holding on to speed boosts might be a good idea because of this. The strength of the item you get is determined by how far away form 1st place you are when getting the item box.I often notice it to be a dividing factor between skilled and novice players that the skilled ones collect coins a lot more diligently. Coins are the exception if you have too little coins. Prefer shorter route over speed, items or anything else.Tips are divided into 3 categories: "General", "Using red shells" and "When in 1st place". I know staying behind and “bagging” items can be a valid strategy too but it’s a little unorthodox for my taste so I’m going to skip talking about that here. The approach for winning here is the classic and most common strategy: try to get ahead as far and as soon as possible and then try to keep first place until finish. If you are struggling to get 1st place even just every now and then, you might not get so much out of these yet. These tips are meant to help already skilled players win more games. All are off the top of my head and from playing the game, no external research. Here’s a handful of pointers that I’ve come up with for myself in the past couple years of playing.
